A Note from David J. Wood
Dear Friends,
Another week, another round of news and events to raise concerns and blood pressure. You don’t need me to rehearse those concerns here. I would only add that in such times, there is no better time to be gathered together in worship when we lift our voices in prayer and song; attune our hearts to what is true, and good and beautiful; dedicate ourselves anew to the living of our faith, hope, and love.
This Sunday we will take up the first Beatitude found in Matthew 5:3, “Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of God.” One way to think of what it means to be “poor in spirit” is that it speaks to those times in life when we feel intensely the weight of our human condition. Such an experience does not remove us from the realm of God. Instead, Jesus seems to be saying, it is in such times that we experience most intensely the nearness of God.
